From His Fullness: Receiving Forgiveness (Not ‘Forgiving Yourself’)

In this episode of Coffee and Counseling, we revisit Jesus’ parable of the unforgiving servant to challenge the popular idea of “forgiving yourself.” Scripture calls us to receive Christ’s full, finished forgiveness—and then extend it to others. We walk through a simple Receive → Release → Respond practice, answer “What can I expect from biblical counseling?”, and share recommended resources.

A simple “Receive → Release → Respond” exercise

  1. Receive – Read 1 John 1:9 and Romans 8:1 aloud. Thank Jesus for the specific sins He has forgiven you.

  2. Release – Pray: “Lord, your grace is perfectly sufficient. I rest in Your finished work.” Rest in the love you have received through Jesus Christ. Then love Jesus back. Allow your heart to grow in deeper affection for God. Then... name one person you need to forgive and ask for grace to move toward that forgiveness in wise, biblically faithful ways as you strive to love others well.

  3. Respond – Where it’s safe and fitting, take one small step. A confession, a conversation, or maybe even setting a boundary. If the situation involves abuse, your step may be reaching out for help and protection first. Otherwise, when we move towards others after having received God's grace and forgiven others, we are taking real concrete steps to rebuilding healthy relationships.
